Buy Nothing – Are you Interested?

I recently came across a news article on the Buy Nothing Project and decided to learn more about this intriguing concept. Buy “nothing”? Well, we all have needs in our daily life for food, clothing, toiletries, detergent, stationary. If we buy nothing how will this work?

After I researched this further the concept makes a lot of sense. Founded in 2013, the project is a network of community-based groups that encourage giving and recycling amongst local groups and communities. With rising inflation and affordability of items needed for daily survival becoming an issue, the initiative’s mission of bringing communities together and sharing things for free amongst each other can be very helpful.

In the US more than 10 million tons of textiles go into landfills every year. If someone else can wear a shirt that you no longer need, is so much better. Maybe the slow cooker you have is not big enough for your family’s needs but there maybe someone in the community who can use it. Why throw it away?

The group promotes sharing and giving but not selling, buying, or bartering. While I was researching this project, I also learned that there is a Buy Nothing Day movement in the US and also it seems in the UK, Sweden and Finland and other rich countries. It promotes examination of the issue of overconsumption.
